Peany Matthews

Painter / Varnish 1979 - present

From Shady Side, Peany is the second youngest of nine children and one of four brothers who have worked for Hartge’s and were all great painters.

Peany grew up working on boats at marinas in southern Anne Arundel county along with his father. Many years ago while Peany was on a job at a local marina, Alex saw his skill with a brush and offered him a job. Two weeks later, Peany began his long career at the yard.

Peany is a skilled artist who transforms tarnished, damaged, and weather-beaten wood and bright work into glossy masterpieces. As an example of his work habits: the Service Manager or Supervisor meet with the guys before the start of the work day, going over important work that must be done, but where is Peany? No one has seen him! You soon discover that he is and has been on the job, long before everyone else. No fuss. No problems. He just gets it done, with a smile!

Rene Velasquez

Painter / Fiberglass / Econolift Operator 2004-2011, 2022-present

Rene excels at all he does. From his first days here in 2005 he worked on the railway crew, hauling boats and doing whatever was needed, including varnishing.  With the railway gone, he runs the Travelift and hydraulic trailer with great skill. His spray painting of Awlgrip is as good as any I have seen. Previously from Shady Side, he is currently living in Annapolis.  Outside of the Yard, he enjoys spending spare time with his daughter and her sports activities.  Although Rene’s schedule is very full, he looks forward to travel and relaxation once he is retired.

David Diaz-Martinez

Painter, 2022 - present

David has worked in the boating industry for 10 years. At Hartge’s he has learned fiberglass composite work and spray painting Awlgrip from Wayne.  Being a conscientious painter with close attention to detail, he finds great satisfaction in seeing a completed project and a happy customer.  In his free time, David makes a point to work out and spend time with his wife, relaxing and celebrating life.

Savannah Gross

Varnish / Painter, 2022 - present

Savannah has been working under the apprenticeship of Peany Matthews since 2022 and her skill as a painter has flourished. Her attention to detail is apparent and she is consistently sought out to work on some of the most important projects with our most experienced employees.
